Bundaberg Library

The Bundaberg City Council library has been designed as a column-free space for maximum internal planning flexibility.

The library building is 1700sqm in floor area and incorporates two building elements. The main element is a lightweight steel-framed, long spanned roof structure with an expressed external tri-column grid which holds up the single-span, floating roof. This design provides for a column free, flexible internal space for maximum planning options and future refit potential to an adaptive reuse. In plan an elliptical masonry wall element defines the offices, amenities, storage and plant room. The sculptural element protrudes through the main building to create a dynamic architectural form.

This building typology engages similar design principals to the Bundaberg Airport, which was also designed by Noel Robinson Architects. The white theme and structural steel base elements of both depict the lightness within the subtropical landscaped grounds. They both deliver an iconic building form for the council, which projects the modern contemporary thinking of the local authority.
